Job Description

Job Summary

The Graduate Surveyor will support the commercial and quantity surveying functions across construction projects, assisting with the measurement, valuation, cost control, procurement, and administration of works. The role will provide an opportunity to develop practical experience in quantity surveying and commercial management while working closely with the Commercial Manager, Senior Quantity Surveyors, project teams, subcontractors, and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the measurement and quantification of construction works for tenders, valuations, and commercial reporting.
  • Support the preparation of subcontractor and supplier enquiries, including reviewing quotations and commercial documentation.
  • Assist with the preparation of interim payment applications and valuations in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Assist with checking and processing subcontractor payment applications and invoices.
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of project cost reports, budgets, forecasts, and cash-flow information.
  • Assist in monitoring project expenditure against budgets and approved allowances.
  • Support the preparation of variations, claims, and other commercial submissions, ensuring appropriate supporting documentation is maintained.
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of records for contractual and commercial matters.
  • Develop knowledge of standard methods of measurement and apply appropriate measurement techniques under supervision.
  • Assist with the preparation of quantities, take-offs, bills of quantities, and other commercial documentation.
  • Liaise with project and construction teams to verify work progress, quantities, and site records.
  • Assist in identifying potential commercial, contractual, and cost risks and escalate these to the Senior Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager.
  • Support negotiations and commercial discussions with subcontractors and suppliers as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of correspondence, measurements, valuations, and commercial documentation.
  • Assist in final account preparation and settlement.
  • Develop an understanding of standard forms of contract, including FIDIC, and their application to construction projects.
  • Ensure company procedures and quality management requirements are followed.
  • Attend site visits to verify progress, quantities, and completed works.
  • Perform other duties and assignments as directed by the Commercial Manager or Project Manager.
  • Reports to the Commercial Manager or Senior Quantity Surveyor.
  • Works closely with Project Managers, Construction Teams, Finance, Procurement, Engineering, and other relevant departments.
  • Liaises with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers as required for assigned commercial activities.
  • Works under the general supervision of the Commercial Manager or Senior Quantity Surveyor.
  • Carries out assigned quantity surveying and commercial activities with increasing levels of independence.
  • Responsible for the accuracy and timely completion of assigned commercial documentation.
  • Seeks guidance on complex contractual, commercial, and financial matters.
  • Escalates potential risks, discrepancies, and issues to the appropriate senior team member.
  • Demonstrates initiative in developing technical and commercial knowledge.
  • Assist with project budgets, cost reports, and forecasts.
  • Support the monitoring of project expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Assist in reviewing subcontractor payment applications and invoices.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Fresh graduate or up to 2 years of relevant experience in quantity surveying or commercial management within the construction industry.
  • Basic understanding of construction methods, materials, and project processes.
  • Basic knowledge of measurement techniques, quantities, take-offs, and Bills of Quantities.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
