Role Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Research Associate (RA) to work on a research project tentatively entitled “The (Attempted) Application of Marxian Theory of Surplus Value to Neoliberal Economics”, led by a senior DI faculty member. The project seeks to offer a critical look at attempted applications of Marxian Surplus Value to neoliberal economics, and in particular to the differential remuneration (salaries, shares, bonuses, etc.) of senior executives in private business (and increasingly in public positions).

The chosen candidate will assist the faculty member with collecting and reviewing the existing literature that includes (but not limited to) the following:

  • The critiques of Marxian theory of surplus value (and theories of value in general) and the viability of alternatives.
  • The place of value and its alternatives in post-Keynesian economics, and how is the concept of exploitation handled in these contexts.
  • Recent attempts to revive Marxian theories of value as a possible tool to analyze neoliberalism and globalization, and their critiques.

The RA is expected to conduct a concise literature review of how theories of value have progressively been reduced to obsolescence in economic theory, and how successful are the attempts to re-introduce them, especially as an attempt to account for neoliberal and globalized methods of “exploitation”.

He or she should have proven working knowledge and experience of conducting literature reviews and writing high quality research papers, in addition to working knowledge of the topic of the paper. Work completed could merit co-authorship on the final paper and the work must be completed by September 2024.

The approximate term of appointment will be starting in July 2024, working part-time until September 2024.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data collection/gathering sources as directed by faculty member.
  • Drafting and updating literature reviews
  • Updating references
  • Coordinate regular meetings as required.
  • Assist with preparation of the journal article as appropriate or directed.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Fluency in English and the ability to conduct research activities orally and in writing in English
  • Good track record in research and scholarly writing
  • Organization and management skills
